NEW FORM LA TOUCHE LEGACY CONFERENCE TO BE HELD THIS YEAR
Chairman of the La Touche Legacy Committee George Jones has confirmed that the 26th La Touche Seminar will be held during the September weekend of 26-28. The Seminar will of course change this year according to George Jones in view of the new rules that will apply to conferences and seminars that the much reduced Local Authority sector will be allowed attend.
In order to meet the change there will be a much bigger focus on the local communities and indeed on Local Historical Associations throughout the county but the Committee hope to maintain the relationship built up with Ards Borough Council over the past 20 years.
George Jones announced that this years Seminar will be organised in association with the Greystones Archaeological and Historical Society and the County Wicklow Library Service, and the theme of this years Seminar will be World War 1 (1914-1918)
This war saw 210,000 Irishmen serving in the British forces, 35,000 Irish died in the war and since this year is the centenary of its start the La Touche Legacy have secured The Great War Roadshow which has Dr Myles Dungan (RTE Broadcaster and historian) heading up a touring programme of talks and presentations on the Irish experience of WW1. This Roadshow will also include many leading historians, broadcasters, authors and academic presenters such as Turtle Bunbury, Dr Ciaran Wallace, and John O’Keeffe.
The Seminar will run from Friday 26th September to Sunday 28th September in Charlesland Golf and Country Club and details of the full programme including admission arrangements will shortly be published concluded George Jones.
THE GREAT WAR ROADSHOW
World War 1 (1914-1918) saw 210,000 Irishmen serving in the British forces. 35,000 Irish died. As the centenary of The Great War reaches us, RTE broadcaster and historian Dr. Myles Dungan is heading a touring programme of talks and presentations on the Irish experience of WW1.
The Great War Roadshow is a series of talks with both a national and local emphasis, ideally based around a county dedication, anniversary, exhibition or commemoration. TalentBase are liaising with Wicklow county library, heritage officers and local historians to tailor an event specifically toGreystones and Wicklow. There will be a number of speakers skilled in communicating with non-specialist audiences. In an engaging and accessible fashion they will outline the issues and narratives of Irish involvement in World War 1.

Myles presents The History Show on RTE Radio 1 and is the author of two works on Ireland and World War 1, Irish Voices From The Great War(1995) and They Shall Grow Not Old (1997).

Turtle is presenter of The Genealogy Roadshow on TV and author of a forthcoming book on 40 great Irishmen in WW1.
Dr. Ciaran Wallace – ‘Women And Children First: The Home Front During World War 1.’
An academic and broadcaster, Ciaran is a social historian associated with TrinityCollege, Dublin. He featured prominently in the recent RTE Radio series on the 1913 Lockout.
John O’Keeffe – ‘Moral Insanity And The Great War: Bad Men In Good Jobs.’
A criminologist, broadcaster and journalist, John is an adjunct teaching fellow in the School of Psychology, TrinityCollege, Dublin and a regular contributor to TV and radio.
A.N. Other – ‘County and the Great War.’
A local historian with an interest and expertise in the history of the 1914-18 period.
