The Society was established in Greystones, County Wicklow, Ireland in 1988 and has been very active since this time, meeting on average ten times per year. There are currently about 80 members in the Society. For information on their meetings, go to the website.
The objectives of the Society are broadly to:
-
Actively promote interest in, and awareness of, the North Wicklow archaeological/historical heritage
-
Preserve and protect the sites of Archaeological and Historical interest in the North Wicklow area
-
Gather and record information relevant to local archaeology, genealogy and local history, and to publish this information
They achieve the latter objective by publishing, in paper form, an occasional Greystones Archaeological & Historical Society journal which collects together papers of local interest, often those presented to meetings of the Society. To date they have completed six such journals and these are now accessible online. Useful sources of historical and archaeological information are accessibe also. Other material of general interest to the Society can be accessed at miscellaneous on the site.
If you would like to find out more about the Greystones Archaeological & Historical Society or if you would like to join the Society, please e-mail them via their site.
In April 2012 the Society was delighted to be awarded the 2012 Greystones Cultural Award 'for their outstanding work in making known our history and helping to preserve what is here for the future' (Wicklow Times 24th April 2012). Congratulations to all involved both now and in the past.
And finally, some dates for your 2013 diary: the Society will be 25 years old in 2013 and we plan to hold a number of events over the weekend 22nd - 24th June 2013. Keep an eye on the website for more details.
